The Hot Starts, Question Marks, and Falling Apart
September 14th 2010 01:23
This past weekend was another highly-interesting one in college football, with the two front-runners posting statement wins, and several top 25 teams (most in the ACC) getting upset. Throw in the surprising starts and the teams were still not sure about, and there's plenty to talk about in the college football world.
The Hot Starts
Alabama- who else could I start with after the pure beating of Joe Pa's Nittany Lions. The Tide were dominant, and they didn't have their top defensive lineman. I also still don't think Julio Jones is at the top of his game, and that's scary. Who needs the heisman winner when you have Trent Richardson. All the talk about him being just as good, if not better than Mark Ingram, well, I believe it. With him and Marcel Dareus coming back this week, it doesn't look to promising for any opponent.
Ohio State- You may say Jacory Harris and Miami made their fair share of mistakes, and you would be right. But the Buckeyes made them pay for them. And forget the whole thing about a Big Ten team not keeping up in the speed department with a southern team, because OSU isn't the typical Big Ten team. Yes I describe myself as a Buckeye "hater", but I can't just brush them aside any more. I still think they'll have their problems with Iowa, but their starting to prove me wrong for calling them over-rated.
Oregon- Wow! Talk about putting up some points. One week after making New Mexico look like a division III team, the Ducks (my band-waggon team) destroyed Tennesee 48-13. That's putting up some numbers right there. Even though I think USC and Stanford will both be tough tests for them, and Oregon State and Arizona could give them all they can handle, I think this Oregon team can run the table. It's been no Jeremiah Masoli, no problem for the Ducks. We'll see if these scoring rampages continue.
Oklahoma- Yes this will surprise some, because most think it was more FSU not showing up, rather than Oklahoma's game. But I think you have to give a thumbs' up to this Sooner squad. The first week they didn't look so hot, but they tweaked a couple of things and their execution improved drastically. To me, as of now, they're the easily the best looking team in the Big 12. Yes, over Texas and Nebraska. Both the Sooners and Longhorns should easily make it un-scathed to the red-river rivalry. Should be another good one.
Michigan- Yes, more love for the Big Ten. It's not like me to be that generous to that conference, but I'm having a good day. Holy Denard Robinson! What an athlete. One week after Robinson and the Wolverines took out upset-minded Connecticut, the new star was away from the "Big House" for the first time this year, but it didn't faze him. Michigan has awhile before another big showdown, just over a month away against Iowa. That's plenty of time for them to fine-tune the offense even more, and hopefully Robinson won't have to get 500-plus yards for Michigan to get every W.
Question Marks
Texas- Am I the only one that has some questions when it comes to the Longhorns? Sure, they have the solid offensive line to protect Garrett Gilbert, but Gilbert hasn't done anything that impressive. Scoring 34 points in both of your games is good, but when your supposed to be a top ten team, and the teams your playing are Rice and Wyoming. 34-7, and 34-17 against those knid of teams won't cut it against an Oklahoma or Oklahoma State.
Florida- Yes I bleed it, but I don't know I believe it. The fan part of me says everything’s find, but the fact is, it's not. Forida played in the first half of their game against South Florida the same way they played the whole game against Miami of Ohio. Even wth the glimse of old here and there, they weren't consistent, weren't entirely in sync, and didn't have the rythm that they are known for. Jeff Demps looks as good as ever, but he can't carry the full load. When the Gators finally face a team that doesn't make as many mistakes, they could be in trouble.
Nebraska- Not entirely sold on this team. 38-17 against Idaho doesn't quite cut it, but their black-shirt D looks almost back to their old selves. They don't play a particularly hard schedule, so we'll see how far they can go. As of now, I would say yes to them winning the North in the Big 12, but the championship could be a complete different story. I just don't think they're "electric" enough on offense, and it will eventually show when the defense can't take the full load.
Wisconsin- They don't impress me much at all really. The Badgers, I thought, coming into this season were over-rated, and they haven't done anything so far to prove me wrong. I don't think they're any where close to Ohio State or Iowa, and even after getting beat up, I still think Penn State is just as good as Wisconsin. The opponent Alabama killed in their opener (San Jose State) wasn't really in it, but hung around with Wisconsin.
Boise State- Thank yooouuuu, JMUUUUU! Now I don't have to hear all this Bronco bullcrap the rest of the year. Let me say this, I think Boise State is a top 15, top 10 team. I think the playoff should happen. I think the Pac-10 should invite Boise State in their conference, to prove themselves. But until one of those happen, there should be no Broncos in the BCS title game. Simple as that.
Falling Apart
Virginia Tech- Blowing up and then saving the BCS system, all in just a span of less than a week. The Hokies probably wish they were up and down like that, but only are experiencing the latter. I would say that I told people this would happen to Tech, but I'm sure a lot of people saw this coming too, so no pat on the back fo me. "Beamer ball" is going down the drain.
Florida State- Let the ACC grave-digging continue. Sure this team did look good... against Samford. I think some commentators feel dumb saying "They looked real good this week, I know it's Samford, but they look like the old FSU." Yeah, that back-fired. 47-17 doesn't look to swell on their chances of being a top team again, but heck, look on the bright side, it couldn't get much worse. And also, it's not like they lost any ground in the ACC. After two weeks of ACC football, I've determined that Maryland probably looks the best.
Georgia Tech- It's like "murdered" row in this segment, but I can't stop from continuing to bash the ACC. The old run, run, and... run philosophy didn't exactly fly against Kansas this week, and the Yellow Jackets became just another of the many ACC victims in week 2 of college football. I think out of these three, Georgia Tech actually will rebound the best and have a solid run, that could find them in the ACC championship.
Georgia- I'm afraid to say, I don't think you'll see the Bulldogs in the top 25 any more. South Carolina stepped up in the moment, and the Dawgs' didn't. Bottom line. After seeing how Tennesee played, Georgia, to me, is still the third best team in the SEC East, but their potential of first went out the door when A.J. Green did what he did. I still have high hopes for Aaron Murray, but he needed that star target to throw to.
