Road to a Repeat
August 26th 2010 22:52
The Alabama Crimson Tide come into the 2010-2011 season having defeated my Florida Gators in the SEC Championship and later winning the BCS crystal ball with their win over Texas last season. This year they look to repeat as National Champions as they battle their tough SEC schedule with the bulls-eye on their back of being the pre-season number one ranked team. Here’s a preview of the Crimson Tide’s 2010-2011 season:
The Tide will open up their schedule at the friendly confines of Bryant-Denney Stadium against San Jose State, a warm-up for their first big test the next week vs. Joe Pa's Nittany Lions, also at home. Their SEC schedule will get kicked off in pig-sooey land at Arkansas, followed by a date I've circled, marked, starred, highlighted, and anything else you can do with a calender date, for the Bama-Florida match up. They'll most likely play again in the SEC championship again anyway, no matter who wins. The Tide will also play crucial league games on the road against LSU and Tennessee to go along with the Iron Bowl vs. Auburn.
Despite the fact that the offense’s runningback Mark Ingram won the Heisman, defense was key to Bama's title run last year. This fall the defending champs are entering the season having lost key members of their defense in Terrence "Mount" Cody and Rolando McClain. but it doesn't matter due to the extremely good depth that Nick Saban has recruited. With Cody and Brandon Deadrick gone, Bama has to rely more on the likes of Josh Chapman and Marcel Dareus up front. With McClain gone, there will be big shoes to fill at LB. A big key for the Tide this year is the solid, and hopefully healthy, play from Donta’ Hightower. One of my favorite players from around my area, Javier Arenas, has also left for the NFL. With this special teams great and solid secondary man gone, as well as the departure of Kareem Jackson, Mark Barron will be responsible for leading the secondary.
On the other side of the pigskin, the defending "stiff-arm man" award winner will be back along with another backfield force, Trent Richardson. Other offensive returners include QB Greg McElroy and star wide-out Julio Jones, who has talent through the roof if he doesn't slack, and beats most DB's even if he does. Marquis Maze (who I became plenty acquainted with when I was sitting in the Georgia Dome watching a horror movie, otherwise known as the SEC championship game), is also returning with his consistency.
Overall the Tide still look very, very strong, just re-stocking like great teams do. Look for them to make another run to the SEC championship, and maybe more.
