Mike Williams DUI is No Surprise

November 20th 2010 04:39
While watching a local reporter in Tampa Bay interview Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Williams yesterday, the segment described different ways of how Williams was "turning it around" after his past troubles in college at Syracuse. Less than half a day later, all that has suddenly changed. Well, so much for that.

With all that said, I can't say that I didn't see this coming. Even if Williams was just under suspicion of driving under the influence, This is nothing new for Tampa Bay. Aquib Talib, Jeremy Trueblood, and Jeremy Stevens (was finally released this year), just to name a few, have been arrested in just over a year. So is this on the Bucs, or is it just that the players are getting too "free" with their actions when they get to Tampa Bay.

Here's the truth: the Bucs draft these players. Mike Williams was never charged with any crimes while at Syracuse, but was suspended after cheating in school and missing the 08' season. The Bucs took a flier on him in the 4th round of this past's year NFL draft. The move has worked tremendously on the field, and no issues were brought up off the field either. Until now, that is.

The Bucs drafted Talib out of Kansas after he failed a drug test at the NFL combine, a bone-head move by the young corner. But the Bucs drafted him in the first round any way to play accross veteran Ronde Barber. Talib was arrested last year after, while being drunk, he punched his cab driver on the Howard Franklin Bridge in Tampa. Tampa Bay as also brought in problems like Stevens and Trueblood, and also Tanard Jackson, who once got into a fight that left him stabbed in the chest. He is now suspended the whole year for steroid use. The second time he's been caught.

The Bucs haven't yet decided if they will play Williams Sunday or not in San Francisco, where Tampa Bay has had a rough past. If Williams doesn't play, it's taking away Josh Freeman's number one target. Whether guilty or not, Williams was speeding and should be fined and sat out for the first half, if not the whole game. It's a big blow if he doesn't play, but it's not a surprise to me that this occured.
