It's Time
October 2nd 2010 19:04
It's college football, it's the SEC, it's the past two national champions, it's two coaches that have won multiple rings, it's the freak at wide receiver, the heisman bulldozer in the back field, and the flash of the fastest man in the game today. It's the swamp chomp, and the rolling of the Tide. It's crimson and white; it's blue and orange. It's Alabama and Florida. AND IT'S TIME...
I stepped outside yesterday, and I quickly discovered something that had been gone for so long I had almost forgot what it felt like. It was the autumn breeze flowing against my face as I felt the feeling that fall had finally and truly come to the southeast. I soaked it in for a few seconds and looked up to see the warm sun beaming down on me and the skies blue as the ocean, and I said to myself "It's time". Sure, football season is in full gear, but the fall has set in just as the biggest game of this still rather young season is to be played out tonight in the deep south in Tuscaloosa. Number one ranked Alabama will take on seventh ranked Florida in what is the most hyped game of the year so far, and has been ever since the schedules were released. There's a big game out west between Oregon and Stanford, not to mention the "Red-River Rivalry" with Texas and Oklahoma squaring off. But this is the big one, and it's time.
Most people think, even with the rise of Auburn and South Carolina to the near top's of their respected divisions, that these two teams will most likely end up playing a re-match in the SEC championship no matter who wins. the truth is, that doesn't matter right now. This does. Alabama was waiting to avenge their loss to Florida in the 2008 SEC championship all year last year, and they got it. Now Florida wants to return the favor. Bama is probably more of a favorite than they were at the beginning of the season, seeing as they've stayed on course, while the Gators have been inconsistent, but at the same time still hold a perfect record. You could talk about how Bama crushed their first test, Penn State, or talk about how at some times their secondary looked human against Arkansas, and you can analyze the way Florida couldn't get it together in their first couple of games, or how they, led by 6 touchdowns from Trey Burton, looked revived against Kentucky. You can talk as much as you want, but at 8:00 tonight, all of the talk goes out the window. It's almost time.
I stepped back inside, blog idea in my head (the one your reading) and thought to myself, this, in a way, is my favorite time of year. I'll probably say that again if these two teams meet again in December, but you get the point. Summer is good for awhile, but nothing beats that coolish breeze, the changing of the leaves, and a truly great college football game. You have to love it, even if you aren't a Gator fan, or a Bama fan, or an SEC fan. We all have our rivalries. Texas knows. Oklahoma knows. They've got a BIG showdown today. Chills go up my spine, and the hair stands up on my neck and arms. Not because of the breeze, but because of the excitement that fills the air around me. To the die-hards of the southeast, this really matters. It's Saban, Meyer, Ingram, Demps, Brantley, Jones, Jenkins, Richardson, Thompson and Dareus. What matters to me, and countless others, is Florida-Bama... It's time.
