Eye of the Tigers

October 20th 2010 23:00
Jordan Hare Stadium will be rocking this Saturday, as the Auburn Tigers take on possibly their toughest, and their highest ranked, opponent yet this season. In steps LSU, the other Tigers, also with a spotless record coming into this Saturday, escaping out of the jaws of defeat multiple times this season to remain un-beaten. The game will not only pin the top two ranked teams in the SEC, but could decide who goes to the conference championship in December. There may be a few big games besides this key match-up, including the number one team in the country (at least in the BCS) Oklahoma going on the road to take on perfect Big 12 foe Missouri, but all eyes should be on the Tigers.

The 4th-ranked Tigers from Auburn are coming off a win in a huge game, as many are this time of year in the SEC, against Arkansas. After pulling away late from the Razorbacks and putting up a college basketball-like score of 65 on them, the war eagle is firing on all cylinders as quarterback Cam Newton continues to state his case for the Heisman trophy. A lot of people are convinced that Newton is one of the most legit players in all the nation, but aren't as high on the team, who has had big wins against Arkansas but have also been close to defeat at the hands of SEC lesser-known’s in Miss State and Kentucky. But as we all know, every week in the SEC is a tough one, which was the case last week when Florida and South Carolina were upset by those two teams respectively.

As for the other Tigers, LSU comes in trying to prove that they're more talent than late-game luck. In consecutive weeks they escaped upsets, with Tennessee having too many players on the field on what should have been the last play of the game, and the following week when they pulled off a no-according-to-plan fake punt to keep a drive alive and beat Florida. Their two-quarterback system hasn't particularly been a strong point, but at the same time, they haven't lost with it. Jarrett Lee has come in to spark the passing game late in LSU's close match-ups, but is not even close to the play-maker and mobile QB that Jordan Jefferson is. At the same time though, while Jefferson has been a threat on the ground, he has been far less than impressive throwing, with seven interceptions to only two touchdowns this season.

These teams will have many strong opponents after this week, including both teams having to face defending national champion Alabama later this year, but this is the game that will prove who is more of the contender to take the SEC west title. And I think the Tigers are... the one's from Auburn. Newton, along with top targets such as Darvin Adams, Terrell Zachery, and Emory Blake, look in full form, and while I think LSU's secondary should fare far better than Arkansas did against Auburn's offensive attack, I still think Newton has a big game with his arm and legs and take this one, despite the fact that Auburn's defense looked pretty atrocious last week. The problem is, LSU doesn't have firepower to take advantage of Auburn's struggling D. All this together should spell victory the Tigers in blue and orange.
