Common, Herbie

September 1st 2010 15:44
For years I’ve watched College Gameday on ESPN, with Lee Corso making a fool of himself on national television, as he puts on a head of an elephant or a duck, or that “thing” they have as Ohio State’s mascot that’s head is so big it looks like a white version of Barry Bonds. He picks a team, they more times than not lose, it’s become expected. Then there’s the man that sits to Corso’s left, Kirk Herbstreit. Now, if there are any Michigan fans reading this blog, feel more than free to stop reading this blog after this sentence, but I personally don’t mind Herbstreit, and Ohio State grad. I think he, as a former QB with the Buckeyes, has good insight, and great knowledge of football being a student of the game, but I was watching his pre-season awards show, “The Herbie Awards” yesterday, and while several of his predictions I agree with and liked, some made me ask “Huh?” or “What?...Really?”

Exhibit A: Jake Locker winning the “ultimate game-changer” award. Once again I ask, what has he done? At least give this to guy with a winning record as a starter. I’m not doubting that he has talent, because I’ve seen him play, but wouldn’t you give this to a guy like Mark Ingram or a play-maker like A.J. Green, Dion Lewis, or Noel Devine. I might even put Terrelle Pryor above him. At least he didn’t win the award for being the best when the game is on the line, because he’s never been in a big enough game for him to be anywhere close. Maybe he proves me wrong, but I still don’t see what others do in Locker.

Exhibit B: Florida winning the SEC. Part A: Florida, rebuilding from the loss of big names, such as Spikes, Hernandez, Pouncey, Haden, and Superman, are being picked by Herbstreit to win the SEC. As a Gator fan, I have no problem with that, but if I was a commentator for a big time TV company, I wouldn’t let the team I die-hardly root for get in the way of picking Alabama (you’ll see what I mean in exhibit c). Part B: If you have Florida winning the SEC, why are they not in your BCS title game. I know you Big Ten and Big 12 fans are rolling your eyes right now, but even if Bama beats Florida in their regular season meeting, Florida should be in the National Championship. So Herbie has to be thinking one of two things. One, he thinks Florida will lose another game, against an LSU or a South Carolina, or two, he thinks Oklahoma, a team behind Florida in the AP rankings, will go perfect and rank higher than Florida, who will have beatin the no.1 ranked team (Alabama) in the nation. A little bit of a head-scratcher there.

Exhibit C: Picking his alma matter to win the National Championship: The whole Oklahoma going to the National title was bad enough, but this, common, Herbie. Sure, they're second-ranked in the nation, but I think there’s just as much of a chance, if not more of one, that Iowa knocks off OSU than if Florida wins the SEC over Bama. He didn’t analyze why he thought the team would make it there, because that was the last 30 seconds of the show, and it was done, like he was running away from what he had just said. Summing it up, he picked Florida to win the SEC over Bama to make what he thought was a clear explanation, having the no.2 team in the title game. I’m not a Herbie hater, but I’m not as big of a fan as I was.
