Carolina is Calling

December 1st 2010 21:58
The likely number one overall pick in next year's NFL draft, if he decides to skip his senior season, is Andrew Luck, the quarterback at Stanford. Currently, the Carolina Panthers look like the worst team in the league, which could lead to the number one overall pick, and the choice of Luck. But Luck may not be the only Stanford Cardinal on his way to Carolina. And I'm not talking about a player.

Carolina coach John Fox is on the hot seat after the recent downfall of the organization, and a current 1-10 that has Carolina as a bottom-feeder in the NFL. Many have said that Jon Gruden would be a replacement for a fired coach in the league, but I think he would be more happy in Dallas than Carolina. Which leads me to this idea: what about Jim Harbaugh?

Harbaugh played in the NFL, and despite not being a head coach for very long, he has always had a surpreme knowledge of the game. He's not a Steve Spurrier that's meant to be a college coach, he's built for the NFL, period. I think he has higher coaching skills than his brother John, who's coaching an 8-win Ravens team right now and has been to the AFC championship game.

If the chips fell into place, this could be the start of a big turnaround for Carolina. Luck would be used to working with Harbaugh, and that would help Luck's transfer to the NFL, if he really needs much of one. There's many other ways Carolina could go, from keeping Fox, or picking up Carson Palmer as their next QB if he leaves Cinci.

Like I said earlier, Luck is the ideal NFL QB in Harbaugh's NFL-type offense. Jimmy Clausen, despite being a 23 year-old rookie, is not their QB of the future in Carolina. The 2nd round pick doesn't have much help around him, but 1 touchdown pass and 5 interceptions with a 50% completion percentage is brutal. He isn't their future. Especially with Luck out there. And maybe Harbaugh to go along with him maybe? It's a good idea for the Panthers. Carolina could be calling.

Ah, you wrote about my favorite team! I hate Gruden and love Jim Harbaugh, simple enough? Fox is gone. He is a lame-duck coach, and the Brad St. Pierre situation as an act of defiance against the front office proved it. He's gone, this is the last year of his contract. I wish he stays though. I met him, and he is a great person and a great defensive mind. "Yeah, we'll shut out the Vikings". Remember that when he was d-coordinator? Anyway, they should either get Luck or A.J. Green. I would prefer Green.

I mean, they need a receiver besides Smith. He is one of the top 5 receivers in the league, but he is constantly triple covered. David Gettis is only a third string receiver. If they can trade down to get Green, they will get other picks to build around even more. Besides, they can find a QB in round 2 or next year. Another receiver is a more pressing need. All the QBs haven't been completely tested yet, and they have had injuries which skews evaluation due to the way injuries affect skill. The QBs just don't have the weapons, and the Panthers need to get the weapons.

I think Luck is a red-shirt Sophomore in terms of eligibility. Meaning he has 2 years left of eligibility. I think that might factor into his decision to leave for the NFL a little.

I like the Harbaugh angle though - nice work. If Harbaugh goes (anywhere), it might make it an easy decision of Luck to declare early.

Thanks for commenting guys. Joe, I think Green and Smith would be a big-time combo for Carolina, and we would see if Clausen became more of a success with those two. And if it doesn't, who knows, maybe like Winless In Seattle said, Luck won't come out till the next year, and maybe they'd get him the next year. I seems like just a couple of years ago John Fox was one of the top minds in the league. The NFL can change on someone quickly.

Fox is still one of the top minds, it's just that he is trying to tank it and he doesn't have the personnel to deal with. People always criticize coaches when the coaches aren't at fault. There just isn't talent at the key positions. Jerry Richardson hates paying #1 pick prices, so it is almost a guarantee that they will trade down. Besides, by trading down they can draft a QB with that pick or wait until next year. AJ Green is just too dynamic to pass up on. This guy is a Dez Bryant kind of talent in terms of recent drafted WRs.

Yeah, I've seen plenty of A.J. over the past few years to know he's got extreme talent (I'm a Gators fan). I've heard 5-6 experts on ESPN say they will most likely move back, so you make a great point, and no, I don't blame Fox, but most do.
