Carolina is Calling
December 1st 2010 21:58
The likely number one overall pick in next year's NFL draft, if he decides to skip his senior season, is Andrew Luck, the quarterback at Stanford. Currently, the Carolina Panthers look like the worst team in the league, which could lead to the number one overall pick, and the choice of Luck. But Luck may not be the only Stanford Cardinal on his way to Carolina. And I'm not talking about a player.
Carolina coach John Fox is on the hot seat after the recent downfall of the organization, and a current 1-10 that has Carolina as a bottom-feeder in the NFL. Many have said that Jon Gruden would be a replacement for a fired coach in the league, but I think he would be more happy in Dallas than Carolina. Which leads me to this idea: what about Jim Harbaugh?
Harbaugh played in the NFL, and despite not being a head coach for very long, he has always had a surpreme knowledge of the game. He's not a Steve Spurrier that's meant to be a college coach, he's built for the NFL, period. I think he has higher coaching skills than his brother John, who's coaching an 8-win Ravens team right now and has been to the AFC championship game.
If the chips fell into place, this could be the start of a big turnaround for Carolina. Luck would be used to working with Harbaugh, and that would help Luck's transfer to the NFL, if he really needs much of one. There's many other ways Carolina could go, from keeping Fox, or picking up Carson Palmer as their next QB if he leaves Cinci.
Like I said earlier, Luck is the ideal NFL QB in Harbaugh's NFL-type offense. Jimmy Clausen, despite being a 23 year-old rookie, is not their QB of the future in Carolina. The 2nd round pick doesn't have much help around him, but 1 touchdown pass and 5 interceptions with a 50% completion percentage is brutal. He isn't their future. Especially with Luck out there. And maybe Harbaugh to go along with him maybe? It's a good idea for the Panthers. Carolina could be calling.

I like the Harbaugh angle though - nice work. If Harbaugh goes (anywhere), it might make it an easy decision of Luck to declare early.
